Taking my time back: one block at a time

by Notorious Spinks on 05.22.2012

frustrated black woman

For the last year I’ve just been existing.  I went from the networking queen who was always at an event to the girl locked up in the house.  When I finally decided to show my face to the outside world,  I got a job that took up 90 percent of my time.  Honestly I was working 12 to 14 hour days.  I was just existing and didn’t pay too much attention to anything else.

But finally…

I’m easing my way back into this thing called life, one step at a time — my life.  Hint. Hint. I’m blogging again.  LOL!  However, my biggest thing that I lost during this time was my sense of time.  My time management is totally off.

I used to live by my to-do list and get most of the things done (a previous article I wrote).  Now I hate looking at a to-do list.  I just want it away from me… It’s grosses me out.  *I’m literally LOL right here*

I recently asked the ladies in my accountability tribe how they manage their time and they suggested I do blocks.  I am to block off my time by projects.  So yesterday I did just that…sort of…  I am behind on my homework so I blocked the entire day off for homework with the exception of a phone meeting and a two hour television and snack break.

As of now I’m liking this blocking.  Tomorrow Today I’m back to homework but I should be caught up by the end of the day.

Here is the system I created.  I used the online application TeaxDeaux to list my projects ( I wish they had sub-lists like Google Tasks where you can list a task under a task).  Then I recorded all the tasks for the  project(s) in my Google tasks.  Afterwards, I blocked times on my calendar (daily planner) for each project.  So far I am on track since I only have homework listed for Monday and Tuesday.  I guess my real test will come Wednesday to Saturday.  Wish me luck!

How do you management your time? Do you have a system or do you just wing it?

  • I’m so bad with time too!

  • I use a calendar for the big stuff but nothing for my daily time frames. I like how you block off times daily for your activities/duties.

  • I use a to-do list on scratch paper. If I don’t write it down, I forget and that leads to disaster. Thanks for mentioning Google tasks, what a great resource!

  • There is always a loose list running in my head

  • I just wing it but that’s mainly because I have OCD so I’m automatic stickler for time management and getting things done on time. I do love my occasional to-do list though!

  • Good luck. I am still a girl with lists everywhere, but I am trying to you my iPad calendar more.

  • I’m definitely in a transition phase right now {just became a SAHM mom again} so managing my time has taken some getting used to for sure! &With all of the different things I need to do all the time, I love the idea of “blocking” my time. Thanks for the tip!

  • What a great idea, I just started working on a family schedule and didn’t think about blocking time…

Ugh. Don’t get me started. I still haven’t figured out how to manage my time. :p I typically just go by the seat of my pants.

  • I am still trying to figure out the perfect way to manage my time lOL

  • I fly by the seat of my pants most days and hardly get everything done that I want to

  • I am a planner so I write down everything (I’m also very forgetful!) and that helps me stay on track.

  • I wing it. I really should try to get more of a schedule though especially with baby coming..

  • I wing, but would love to get organized!

    • Nothing like organization. It seems like all the energy just flows right when organization is together.

  • For me, time management is always hard due to the sheer amount there is to be done, however when I find I focus on one thing and one thing alone (even if it means staying up till 5 am like now), I can get a lot done. Good luck! I think being scattered or pulled in too many directions definitely works against me.

    • I feel you on that! I’ve been on this homework assignment for the past four days but I’m almost where I need to be. I should be caught up by Friday and that way on schedule.

      • Good luck! I know how you feel. I have a few to finish before my birthday! *crossing fingers*

  • I need some time management skills myself.

    • What’s your current method Virginia?

      • Right now I use my Google calendar and a day planner, but they are haphazard at best. I need to read that 7 habits book again, though I hated it the first time around.

  • I don’t really have too great of a system, but I do use a paper planner without which I’d be totally lost.

    • I have one too! I’ve just gotten so used to not using it that I forget about it. I’m working my way back to the real world though.

  • Heehee, I don’t. I just wing it and hope for the best.

  • I love this idea! I need to do something like this because I always have a million things to do and spend too much time doing the wrong thing instead of concentrating on what needs to get done.

    • I’m like that when I get on social media. So I stay away sometimes just so I wont get sidetracked.

  • Nearly a year and a half ago my husband got shipped off to Asia for two years and my boys and I have been w/ his parents. I’ve been winging everything since.

It sometimes works out and sometimes it doesn’t. But it seems like I can’t be organized here.

    One day at a time.

    • I totally understand. Maybe once he gets back and you get your space again then you’ll be good. There is nothing like having your own section carved out just for you. I’m changing a room in my mom’s house to the office but it’s slow moving with school and blogging but it’s moving.

On the good side, your two years is almost up!

  • I am not good with time management either.

  • I suck at time-management. I really wish I could do better… I may give this blocking a try. 🙂

    • It’s really working for me and I’m sticking to it so far!

  • I stay home all day and I still can’t manage my time– one of my biggest flaws.

  • I just wing it, most days. I do keep a calendar for listing appts for the family. Everything else is worked around the appts.

    • where do you usually fit your blogging in or keep track of deadlines for posts?

  • I’ve tried both and both ways I self- sabotage…lol

  • I need to learn how to manage my time better, because I’m always busy, busy, busy. 🙁
