Health Talk: 5 Ways to Motivate Yourself to Better Health

by Notorious Spinks on 08.22.2013

Everyday is a struggle to climb on the treadmill and walk, but I know I must do it. If for no other reason, I like how I feel after I put my time in.  It kind of energizes me and helps me to sleep better at night. On the other hand, it also  fires these thighs and calf muscles up and I feel it when I take my first steps in the morning.  I know it will get better as time goes on but I figure something will always ache on this old body as I push myself harder and harder to accomplish my goals.

Yesterday, as I wrestled with the decision of whether to exercise or not, I chose to make a list of things that would motivate me.  It was not easy making this list because my shins and thighs ached as I told myself that the treadmill was not the enemy.  It is my friend… or so they say.  So here’s five of the things on my list that I intend to use to motivate me to keep going on my journey to good health.

Find a Workout Partner

Although I have not officially found a workout partner, I do follow people on my social media channels that go hard in the gym.  I see how they put in the work and get results.  I intend to find a workout partner this fall when I join a local gym so we can have a regular time to meet and hold each other accountable.  Two heads are always better than one.

Get your Motivation Music

The first thing I did when I started to work out was fill my iPod touch with banging beats.  You can find anything from Beyonce, David Banner, and T.I. to Black Eyed Peas and Pink.  Yes, I have it all.  All I need is a beat that goes hard and makes my heart beat a little faster.  Make  sure you put all of your favorite tunes in rotation.  Believe me, it helps.

Find Quotes that Speak to You

I love quotes!  It may come from my love of literature but I try to find motivational quotes that encourage me to keep going.  For instance, here is one of my favorites from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.”

It makes me get back on the treadmill every time I think of all the past times I started to work out then quit.

Celebrate Your Successes

Some would have us believe that we can’t celebrate until the end, but that’s not true.  Take the time to celebrate your small accomplishments.  If you walk five minutes longer on the treadmill than you did yesterday, don’t be ashamed to share the picture with your friends and followers.  Those small gestures of liking the photo and words of encouragement will help along the way.  Trust me.

Choose Goal Garment(s)

You ask what are goal garments?  Well goal garments are those clothes that you want to fit into.  They could be some new items or old, but keep them handy for motivation.  Pull them out every so often or keep them in sight, but try them on once a month to see how far you’re coming.  I’m almost in my Levi’s…oh, how I love Levi’s.

So how do you motivate yourself to keep going?  Or even get started?
