Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve never really been into the ‘girly’ stuff. I didn’t like to wear dresses or ribbons and pearls - or jewelry for that matter! I never argued with my parents about letting me wear make-up or getting piercings. I didn’t even start carrying a purse until my first job. Even then, it was more of a knapsack than anything else. I was a tomboy, the kind that hung out with her older brother and his friends. We played football, climbed trees and got in some crazy adventures…all of which cannot be done in fancy, frilly dresses. I wore more grass stains and mud than make-up. Of course, once you go through that puberty nightmare, things kind of change. You have to maintain more carefully and have the added burden of oily skin.
Who has time for pimples?
I had never paid much attention to cleansers or skin treatments until my adolescence. Even then, I wasn’t very good at knowing what creams and lotions were good or not. I just surfed through the pharmacy aisles of popular brands that I had seen on tv or formulas that some of my friends at school used. Now that I have been searching for health and homemade remedies for a few years, I know that brand names are hardly a way to look for anything at all. The internet makes it easier to find detailed information nowadays, opposed to the early 90s. Researching ingredients is the first step to choosing any health products effectively or even better- create your own! I particularly like natural remedies such as grape seed oil, which you can view its uses here through Auntie Oprah’s home skin care regimens.
A lot of people ask me how I do it, be it my friends or coworkers… even people I have just met notice my healthy glow! As flattered as I am, I have yet to write a blog post on it, but I often recommend homemade-skin-care-
Now that I have been dabbling in skin care for a while, I’ve learned some great techniques for cleansing and treating. I do this as a daily routine now and reap the many benefits of a beautiful complexion. I am not plagued with blemishes or pimples and it does not cost me a fortune. I get a lot of compliments from my female friends and an increase in male attention. The confidence boost is just one of the many perks of a healthy routine on a penny budget. I don’t wake up in the morning worried about unsightly, darkened eyes or acne appearances however, I do have two dark spots that I work hard to lighten and eliminate. It’s as refreshing as my morning coffee. Since I am more confident, I see these results reflect positivity all around me. The revitalized me gets more opportunities than the reserved me ever did.
Since my tomboy days are over and I’ve been into skin care, I have recently picked up waxing. With proper care, redness goes away fairly quickly and does not add damage to my skin. I have found that, much like razors, a male waxing kit is much more attentive to sensitive skin than any feminine targeted product. I like the smooth silk feeling of a fresh wax job and the lasting hairless experience opposed to shaving. I don’t have to take care of blades or worry about cutting my skin; I just apply the strips and peel them off. It’s much quicker and has little maintenance.
Although, I miss my rambunctious days of trudging through mud and climbing trees, I have never been so comfortable in my own skin. Granted, I still don’t often wear frilly dresses but when I do, I feel fabulous. A lot of brands will tell you that they are a ‘one size fits all’ solution or that you need their complete collection of care products to get the job done right, however, I find that home remedies hold the best results.
