Last night, more than 500 women attended The Home Depot’s Girls’ Night Out event in Memphis, TN hosted by the nationally syndicated radio talk show host, Tom Joyner. This Do-It-Herself event is produced bi-annually and designed to inspire and empower women to roll up their sleeves and tackle those lingering home projects, while enjoying a night of fun and entertainment.

According to The Home Depot’s Multicultural Marketing Manager, Melissa G. Brown, more than 70% of American households are run by single women. As a single mom of three, she knows all too well the difficulty of raising a family while managing the upkeep of a home. Like so many of us, she’s a perfectionist. However, as a woman who wants it done now (sounds like us all, huh?), she had to get past her fears and seek help. Yes, she went to the Home Depot.

As a child, I would get so embarrassed when my mom would see a pile of junk on the side of the road. She would stop the car and see if she could find anything to salvage. On many Saturdays, we would go to The Home Depot and she would get paint, spray paint (her favorite item), sand paper or whatever else she needed to make these items brand new to her. Fast forward a couple of decades and everyone is doing it. My mom was a trendsetter and I didn’t even know. She was a founding member of the DIY Crew before they were even official.

In an interview with Joyner, most known for his support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), I wanted to know about his participation in The Home Depot’s GNO initiative. Joyner shared his enthusiasm to motivate women to learn the skills needed to tackle those DIY projects, and how women no longer have to wait on a man to do these jobs for them… Especially, during any sports season (I added that part ;)).

In addition to Joyner’s appearance, celebrity broadcast journalist, Sharon Carpenter was in attendance. After speaking with Carpenter and lushing over her British accent, I found that she too, desires to see women thrive and live in the NOW.

“I love to see women empowered for a good cause, a cause with a purpose,” she stated. “These women are learning great DIY tips and the importance of not waiting on anyone to do anything.”

Like Carpenter, I want us all to be great women, do great things and make our mark on this Earth. The Home Depot wants us to be great, too. With a night filled with music, Memphis’ own legendary deejay, Stan Bell kept the party lively and rocking. If you know anything about Memphis, then you know that a party ain’t a party unless Stan Bell is on the turntable.

In addition to the entertainment, The Home Depot allowed the women to make their own DIY projects while learning to use power-tools with professionals’ on-hand to assist. There were prizes. A fashion show. A dance contest. Lots of prizes… big drills, little drills, swag bags and gift cards. One lucky winner even won a $500 gift card.

Y’all know I keep y’all in the know, so when The Home Depot announces a Girls’ Night Out in your city. Do me a favor. First, tell me so I can use some of these frequent flyer miles. Second, RSVP and make plans to be in the house, because The Home Depot knows about saving and doing, but they know how to throw a party, too!
